Portugal won the 2016 European Championship after an extra-time goal against France.
Portugal
overcame the early loss of captain Cristiano Ronaldo to beat hosts
France in the Euro 2016
final and claim their first major tournament
triumph thanks to substitute Eder’s superb extra-time winner.
Eder’s
long-range shot beat the despairing dive of France captain Hugo Lloris
and then sealed a first ever major tournament win for Portugal.
Eder
shook off Laurent Koscielny and fired a low, right-foot shot to break
French hearts in the 109th minute after the match at the Stade de France
had ended level at 0-0 after 90 minutes.
Ronaldo was taken off on
a stretcher in the 25th minute after he failed to recover from a heavy
challenge by France’s attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet.
Nani
took over as captain but Portugal were short of their most important
player and Ronaldo’s absence meant being even more dependent on a system
whereby all four of their midfielders would routinely drop back into
defence when the team did not have the ball.
France, the firm
favourites, were unable to capitalise on Ronaldo’s absence, although
they almost won it in the 91st minute when substitute Andre-Pierre
Gignac turned and hit the inside of the post.
He returned to sit
on the bench, his left knee bandaged, and limped onto the pitch to
encourage his teammates at the start of both periods of extra time.
